Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked
Questions

New to spray tanning or just new to us? We've got answers to everything below.

General
The Basics

A spray tan uses DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a colorless sugar derived from plant sources, that reacts with the amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to create a natural-looking tan color. It has nothing to do with UV rays — there's no sun damage, no burning, and no risk to your health. The color develops over several hours and typically lasts 7–10 days.

Not with us. The days of orange spray tans are long gone. We use NUDA professional solutions that are formulated to work with your natural skin tone and undertone. Our custom-blended approach means your tan will look like it belongs to you — warm, natural, and luminous. Proper prep and aftercare also play a huge role in how natural your result looks.

Yes. DHA is FDA-approved for external use on the skin and has been used in self-tanning products for decades. Our solutions are applied topically and only affect the outermost layer of dead skin cells. We provide nose filters, lip balm, and eye protection during your session to minimize any inhalation. If you have specific skin conditions or sensitivities, please let us know before your appointment.

The actual spray application takes about 10–15 minutes. We'll add a few minutes before for a quick consultation and skin assessment, and a few minutes after for drying time and aftercare instructions. Plan for about 30 minutes total for your appointment.

Yes! We are primarily a studio-based service, but we do offer mobile spray tanning for special events — weddings, bridal parties, prom groups, photo shoots, and private events. Mobile bookings require a minimum number of guests and a travel fee. Contact us to inquire about your event.

We recommend consulting your physician before receiving any spray tan services during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. While DHA is applied topically and considered safe for external use, every pregnancy is different. If your doctor clears you, we're happy to accommodate you with extra care and precautions.

Wear or bring loose, dark clothing — the bronzer can transfer to light fabrics during development. Avoid anything tight at the waist, bra straps, or socks right after. Flip flops are ideal footwear. A loose dark dress, sweats, or a flowy outfit is perfect. We also recommend a dark bra or going without one during development if possible.

Prep & Aftercare
Before & After

The most important steps: exfoliate 24–48 hours before using an oil-free scrub, shave at least 24 hours before, and arrive with completely clean, dry skin — no lotion, deodorant, perfume, oils, or makeup. These products create a barrier that prevents the solution from absorbing evenly. Check out our full Prep & Aftercare Guide for everything you need to know.

It depends on which tan you chose. For a Rapid Tan, rinse after 2–4 hours for a lighter result or up to 6 hours for deeper color. For a Classic Tan, develop overnight — 8–10 hours is ideal. Your first rinse should be lukewarm water only — no soap, no scrubbing. You'll see bronzer wash off, which is completely normal. Your actual tan is still developing underneath.

During your development window, avoid water, sweat, tight clothing, and humidity. Once your tan has developed, avoid long hot baths, chlorine pools, hot tubs, exfoliating products, loofahs, and skincare with AHAs, BHAs, or retinol — these all accelerate fading. Moisturize daily to keep your tan looking its best.

Moisturize every single day — this is the single most important thing you can do. Hydrated skin holds color longer and fades more evenly. Use a gentle, fragrance-free, oil-free lotion. Take shorter, cooler showers. Pat dry instead of rubbing. Avoid exfoliants until you're ready to prep for your next tan. With good aftercare, your tan can last 7–10 days.

Dark patches or streaks are almost always caused by insufficient skin prep. Dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles absorb more solution and go darker. Exfoliating 24–48 hours before and moisturizing dry areas the night before your appointment prevents this. Tight clothing worn during development can also cause streaking. Follow our prep guide closely and you'll love your results every time.

Not during your development window. Sweat during development will cause streaking and uneven results. Once your tan has fully developed and you've done your first rinse, light exercise is fine — just shower afterward and pat dry gently. Avoid heavy sweating for the first 24–48 hours if you want maximum longevity.

Results
Your Glow

That's entirely up to you! During your consultation we'll discuss your goals and customize your solution shade accordingly — from a light sun-kissed glow to a deep, rich bronze. Your natural skin tone, prep routine, and how long you develop also affect the final result. First-timers often start lighter to see how their skin responds, then go deeper from there.

With proper prep and aftercare, most clients see their tan last 7–10 days. Skin type, daily activities, how often you shower, and how well you moisturize all affect longevity. Oily skin types and those who swim or shower frequently may see faster fading. Following our aftercare guide gives you the best shot at a long-lasting result.

Skin texture varies across your body, which means DHA develops differently in different areas. Drier, rougher areas like elbows, knees, and ankles absorb more solution. Thinner skin areas may show color more quickly. Consistent exfoliation and moisturizing before your appointment — especially on these rough areas — creates a more even base for a uniform result.

Not at all — this is completely normal and expected! The color washing off is the bronzer guide color, which is added to the solution so we can see even coverage during application. Your actual tan from the DHA is still developing underneath and will continue to deepen for several hours after your rinse. Don't panic — your glow is coming!

Results can vary slightly session to session based on your skin's current condition, hydration level, time of year, any medications you're taking, and how closely you followed prep and aftercare. We keep notes on your skin profile to dial in your formula each visit, so the more you come in, the better we get at perfecting your golden hour.

Most clients come in every 1–2 weeks to maintain their glow. We recommend letting your current tan fully fade and exfoliating before your next session for the most even, beautiful result. Booking on top of an old tan without proper prep can lead to patchiness. We'll help you find a schedule that works for your lifestyle.
